For three years now, Wesley has done an annual Mission Sale. The foundation of this mission project relates to a statement Jesus makes in the latter part of Matthew when he was asked – “what is the most important commandment?” Jesus replied – “there are two, to love God with all your heart, and to love your neighbor as yourself”. He went on to say that all the prophets and the scriptures are based on those two commandments. Meaning, if you are truly following those two commandments you will always be doing the right thing in anything you do.
The Wesley Annual Mission Sale was conceived and is organized to accomplish these two commandments. First, to give our members and our friends a chance to work as a community on a project to put in action our love of God. Second, to love our neighbors who need help.
We help our neighbors in Beaumont by using the proceeds of this event:
- To maintain a church fund (known internally in Wesley as the St. Stephens Fund) used to help people in the community (within and without the church) who are having trouble meeting day to day living needs. That has ranged from help to meet electric bills to help in paying for chemotherapy drugs.
- To provide financial help to Boy’s Haven in Beaumont. Boy’s Haven provides a safe place to live for up to 24 boys who had the misfortune to be born in families where they don’t have a safe place to live.
- To provide financial help to Girl’s Haven in Beaumont. Girl’s Haven provides a safe place to live for up to 24 girls who had the misfortune to be born in families where they don’t have a safe place to live.
Wesley does various events throughout the year with and for Boy’s Haven and Girl’s Haven. This event is focused on providing financial help and having some of the boys and girls from Boy’s Haven and Girl’s Haven work in the project, so we can get to know them better. We also have a free shopping afternoon for all the boys and girls on Friday afternoon (whether they are working with us or not, they come over by bus). As you might think, this is very popular.
We do this annual event on the Wesley campus in the third week of June, on Thursday, Friday, and a half day on Saturday.
If you would like to be part of this, please call the Wesley office and they will get you to the right person.
